An Amazon Best Book of September 2017: Theres so much to admire in My Absolute Darling: acute emotional insight, precise and evocative writing about the natural world, and pacing worthy of an action movie. How can this possibly be a debut? But some people live up to their names, and Gabriel Tallent, whose first novel this is, writes with bravura more experienced authors can only envy. His story, which feels a little like a girl-power fairy tale come true, starts dark. Fourteen-year old Julia, called Turtle, or sometimes Kibble, lives with her paranoid, survivalist father in the wilds of Mendocino County. Their ruin of a house has boarded-up windows and spindled wooden railings overgrown with climbing roses and poison oak. If Turtle is that rose, then her father is the poison oak: his touch (and he touches Turtle) leads to trouble. But hes taught his daughter to shoot and forage — she can decipher the woods, even at night — and those skills serve her well when she finally starts to free herself from his control. One of the delights of this novel is the way Tallent reveals another culture another world, really coexisting in Mendocino, where middle-aged women practice yoga naked and swear by the goddess while their sons joke about hippies reading Finnegans Wake to their peyote plants. These flashes of humor and evidence of the sometimes goofy pleasures of civilization are like beacons lighting the way to a better life for Turtle, if only she can make her way out of the woods. –Sarah Harrison Smith, Amazon Book Review
**My Absolute Darling: A Gripping Tale of Survival and Resilience** Delve into the haunting and unforgettable world of "My Absolute Darling," the critically acclaimed debut novel by Gabriel Tallent. This Sunday Times Bestseller is a powerful and unflinching exploration of trauma, resilience, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Set against the backdrop of the rugged Mendocino County wilderness, the novel introduces us to Julia, known as Turtle, a fiercely independent fourteen-year-old. Turtle's life is far from ordinary. Raised in isolation by her survivalist father, Martin, she navigates a world of both breathtaking natural beauty and profound darkness. Martin's influence is a complex mix of survival skills and emotional manipulation, casting a long shadow over Turtle's existence. He has taught her to expertly navigate the forests, hunt, and shoot, but his controlling and abusive behavior leaves her vulnerable and scarred. Tallent's writing is both lyrical and visceral, painting a vivid picture of Turtle's environment. The untamed landscape mirrors the internal turmoil of the young protagonist, as she grapples with the weight of her past and the uncertainty of her future. As Turtle begins to question the boundaries of her father's control, she discovers glimmers of hope in unexpected places. She forges tentative connections with kind-hearted individuals who recognize her intelligence and resilience, and they offer her glimpses of a different life. These encounters ignite a spark within Turtle, fueling her determination to break free from the cycle of abuse and claim her own destiny. "My Absolute Darling" is a difficult but ultimately rewarding read. Tallent doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of Turtle's life, but he also emphasizes her unwavering spirit and her capacity for growth. This is a story about survival, yes, but it's also about the power of human connection, the importance of self-discovery, and the enduring possibility of hope, even in the darkest of circumstances. Readers have praised Tallent's exceptional prose, his unflinching portrayal of complex themes, and the unforgettable character of Turtle, a young woman whose strength and resilience will stay with you long after you turn the final page. Prepare to be moved, challenged, and ultimately inspired by this remarkable novel. A modern classic.
